South Australia packs a lot into a short drive from Adelaide: wine regions, a sheltered coast, an island, and the Flinders Ranges further out. We list around 20 glamping stays across the state, and the easiest way to choose is by region.
The Adelaide Hills and Fleurieu Peninsula are the closest options. Earthship Ironbank is an off-grid studio in the Adelaide Hills, about 45 minutes from the city. Nest & Nature in Inman Valley is an off-grid eco-glamping stay for couples, and The Vineyard Retreat is in McLaren Vale wine country. Aspire Tiny Stays has tiny homes at Sellicks Beach and Willunga.
The Barossa and Clare Valley suit a wine weekend. Tanunda Holiday Park is in the Barossa, and in the Clare Valley you can choose Bukirk Glamping in the hills or CABN Lily, which overlooks vines. Pink Lake Tiny House is beside Lake Bumbunga, about 90 minutes north of Adelaide.
The Murray and Limestone Coast: The Cube Murray River is a floating pod on Wellington marina, about 80 minutes from Adelaide, and Bellwether offers bell tents in Coonawarra wine country.
Kangaroo Island is worth its own trip. Options include Seafront Eco Luxury Tents at Penneshaw, Oceanview Eco Villas at Nepean Bay, Sol Hus on the north coast and Wandering Souls. You reach the island by ferry from Cape Jervis or by air from Adelaide.
The Yorke and Eyre peninsulas are quieter. Try Bayside Glamping & Co or Hillocks Ocean Pod at Marion Bay, Eco Eyre at Port Gibbon, or Kata & Belle at Lincoln National Park.
The Flinders and Gawler Ranges are the outback end of the state. Wilpena Pound Resort and Flinders Bush Retreats are both at Hawker, and Gawler Ranges Wilderness Safaris runs from Wudinna.
Spring and autumn are the sweet spot for wine regions and the coast. Summer is hot inland, though it works well on the coast and on Kangaroo Island. For the Flinders Ranges, the cooler months are much more comfortable. Winter nights can be cold everywhere, so check for heating before you book. Our best time of year guide has more.
Expect roughly $150 to $350 a night for two in a well-equipped tent, pod or tiny home, with island and outback lodges costing more. Rates vary by season, so check the operator’s site. Our cheap glamping guide is worth a look first.
How do I get to Kangaroo Island? By ferry from Cape Jervis, or a short flight from Adelaide.
What’s closest to Adelaide? The Adelaide Hills, McLaren Vale and the Clare Valley are all within roughly two hours.
