Glamping Near Canberra: Bush Escapes Minutes From the City

Canberra might be the most underrated glamping base in the country — you can be at a heritage homestead or bush property in about the time it takes to drive across most other capital cities.

What Canberra’s actually known for

Canberra was purpose-built as the national capital, and it shows — Lake Burley Griffin sits at the centre of the city, ringed by the national institutions that draw most first-time visitors: Parliament House, the Australian War Memorial, the National Gallery of Australia. What surprises a lot of people is how quickly the bush takes over once you leave that core; Namadgi National Park is barely half an hour from Parliament House, and the city’s famous autumn foliage turns entire streets gold every April and May.

Things worth doing while you’re in town

The Australian War Memorial is the one almost everyone visits, and rightly so, while the National Gallery and Questacon round out a solid museum day if the weather’s against you. Mount Ainslie’s lookout gives you the best skyline view of the lake and Parliament House together, and it’s an easy add-on if you’re staying at Cubby and Co in Majura. If you’re at Cuppacumbalong, Namadgi National Park is right on the doorstep for a proper bush walk before you head home.

Weather and when to go

Canberra’s inland location means real seasons, more so than any other Australian capital. Summer (December to February) is hot and dry, regularly reaching 28°C and higher, while winter (June to August) is genuinely cold — frosty mornings are normal, and light snow isn’t unheard of in the surrounding hills. Autumn is Canberra’s standout season: crisp, golden, and mild enough for a comfortable night at any of the properties below, which is exactly why it’s the busiest time to book.

What’s on

Floriade, the Southern Hemisphere’s biggest spring flower festival, fills Commonwealth Park through September and October and is worth planning a trip around if you like your glamping weekend bookended by a few hundred thousand tulips. Enlighten Festival lights up the national institutions each March with projections and extended opening hours, and pairs well with the Canberra Balloon Spectacular held around the same time.

Where to actually stay

15 minutes out: Cubby and Co

Cubby and Co in Majura is barely outside the city — genuinely a lunch-break-length drive if you wanted to push it, though a night away is the better plan.

Heritage stay: Cuppacumbalong

Cuppacumbalong in Tharwa is about 30 minutes from the centre of town — a heritage homestead property with history most “glamping” spots can’t claim.

In town: Alivio Tourist Park

If you want glamping without leaving Canberra at all, Alivio Tourist Park in O’Connor keeps you in the city proper.
